Then again

I have come to the conclusion that I use the wrong tactics training my eminent racing crew.

I need to be more queer and negligent towards animals and maintenance of my livelihood so that I will have a great day on the water that also apparently attract chicks.

What do you know?

At least

we're not this negligent during boating.

Scheisse

Practice day # 2 was a light wind affair. It called for 4-8 but was more like 0-4. Last night we enjoyed some great helmsman ship from a good friend of mine,Elliot.

We left the dock under diesel power infused with a Yuengeling. Hoisted and tacked our way down the Cooper towards Mt.Pleasant. This we have down like any AC team.

Got the chute up and flew it perfectly. Had such good angle so Katie picked up speed on her own apparent wind.
Nice.
Sun is setting.
Gorgeous night.
Start to practice jibes.
We get the hang of it.
We start to nail them.
One more.

Chute gets torn. A crap ending of a great sail and an even better night of camaraderie. Shit happens. Sail maker is to call me tomorrow about how many $$$ needed and possibility of getting it back by Friday for the race.

Race we will regardless, Katie still has 2 sails to mess with but we might find ourselves to be in the cruising class.

Sunday

Perfect winds and the temperature was just right. Had the tide with us sailing out and we turned back with it.

Great day!

Haiti

At church they are collecting clothes and hygiene articles for Haiti who has been hit 4 times by hurricanes so far this year. The poor people doesn't have much to start with and I'm sure even less now. The church has a contact person in Haiti so 100% of things donated will get distributed by him. Marta took this to heart and spent yesterday afternoon collecting things no longer used in our household.

Well, what can I say. 4 enormous bags and 2 boxes of children's clothing and 2 bags of shoes that filled up both cars trunks later, I'm pretty sure we dressed half of Haiti's children under the age of 4.

Boy does that feel good.

Our beautiful little Sofia was so proud delivering it this morning.

Team picture

Yesterday was picture day. It was absolutely impossible to get a good team picture. After about 50 tries Team Chick-Fillet turned out pretty good.

The game that followed was great as well.

Soccer day

I'm taking our soccer player to practice tonight. Hopefully we wont blow away, it's pretty windy today.

If I got 50 cent for every time some one tells me on a windy day: Good day to go sailing, he he, I would be richer than Bill Gates.

Last week it was canceled due to too wet of field. We went and played golf instead.

Wednesday nights are mine and Alex's. Just us.

Family day

Sunday is family day. We made a pick nick and headed down to the marina for some sailing. I have never laughed so hard, neither have I had such a great family experience that all we need to do is say towards me or towards you and 4 of us start to laugh and the 5th is howling of joy.

This day I will treasure in my heart for a long time.

Practice

We are to practice on Katie tonight. A much needed one, we have one broad experience between us in the crew, not so much sailing however. Or what do you say about

one retired air craft mechanic, specialized in hazardous material

one heating and air engineer

one trench and ground digger

one government computer guy who's department designs weapons of mass destruction

We are short one musician due to injury. That's a darn shame since he's the one counting down during the starting sequence. Or counting in I guess, he's a bit unorthodox with a-one, a-one, a-one two three four............

St Sophia

St. Sophia
(d.c.126)

"Sophia" means wisdom in Greek, and for this reason this saint is often regarded as a personification of the wisdom of God, rather than an actual person. This is further enhanced by the fact that she is the mother of three other saints by the names of Faith (Pisti), Hope (Elpida) and Love (Agape).

Legend, however, tells us that these four women all were martyred for their faith in Rome under the emperor Hadrian. St. Sophia was supposed to have been a widow from Milan who gave away all her wordly goods after her husband's death. She then went with her three daughters (see above) to Rome and stayed with a rich lady called Thessaminia.

All the women were tortured and killed for their faith. St. Sophia was the only one who survived, and died of natural causes three days after she had buried her daughters.

She is considered the patron saint of widows.

I was informed of this today by my sister in law. Today is the day they celebrate St. Sophia and she of course thought of her niece who is one saint all right.

409

That's the # of today's post. That's just about one post a day since I started blogging.

Marta asked me tonight if I had blogged today. I said no, I have no inspiration I think that I might stop. Are you nuts she says, are you telling me you're going to break my moms heart.

Well, what the heck am I to blog about?

My sciatic nerve that is hurting me like hell so that all I do is limp?
How the floor boards are rotten on Katie and I can't find the leak that caused it?
How she needs a bottom job?
How my car still sucks and I really do not want to get an other one.

I guess fall is coming, my issues are a spit in the ocean and I should be thankful.

I just don't have even a lick of motivation.

Marta tells me to sit here and think until I come up with a blog. I better obey.

Jacques Clouseau

We have picked up a very big or more truthfully a potentially very big customer. They are French. Nice spiff product. I can see myself in one. I sometimes dream of one and what one can achieve in one of these spiff things.

Come Monday we will have their quality control inspector at our shop.
Flown in from France.
Big stuff.
Important stuff.
Live or die stuff.

And all I can think of is Inspector Jacques Clouseau.
How am I to not giggle?
Some one say Birdie Num Num and that's it.
Deal is lost.

Farmer's market

Every Tuesday here in Mt. Pleasant there's a Farmer's market. They sell all kinds of local produce, foods and crafts. They also do a great job catering to kids.

You're welcome

Marta made a fabulous dinner tonight, her grandma's meatballs in tomato sauce. She made them a little Swedish style this time, the kids were helping. It takes a good bit of time and quite the effort to make this meal, she made it delicious as always.

Jonas: Honey, this is really good!

Marta: Thanks honey!

We eat in quiet and have seconds and third. There are some left overs.

Marta: Would you like this for lunch?

Jonas: Yes please.

Marta: There's still some sauce and meatballs, can you help me poor it in this Tupperware?

Jonas: Off course. (We poor it all in.) I'll just fill the pot with water so that it'll clean easier tomorrow when you do the dishes.

Marta: Aren't you the sweat heart!

Children's museum

here in Charleston we have a pretty cool museum for kids, the Children's Museum. It's situated in an old railroad building down town and has all kinds of stuff for kids to discover and learn. They have a grocery store, a shrimp trawler, dress up castle room, arts and crafts and science.

Marta and Fia went today to inquire about having Alex's birthday party there in December. No could do today but they gave Marta a number to call. All I think is ; you've got to be kidding me. How in the world can you not tell me if I can have a party here or not around December 10? The person in charge was out for the day. Only in Charleston do they not know what to do when the boss is out.

Fia had a great old time, we're members, have been for a few years and most likely will for a few more.

Arghhh

No I didn't

Marta thought that I was nuts sinking Alex's opti, Alex himself couldn't bear the thought of it. In all honesty that was my plan. I had second thoughts and lashed it down good on Katie's fore deck.

We checked on her today, she was fine like everything else. We had a good bit of rain and Isle of Palms recorded a sustained wind of a whooping 29 mph. That's an embarrassment of a Tropical storm. To be on a more serious note we lucked out big time.

So with more to come this season we just put the dodger back on Katie, sails, covers and all other stuff will have to stay down below. But my spider net of dock lines will stay just as they are.

While we wait

All day on the radio the Charleston preparedness center has given us advice. For our best I guess, with that said I'm absolutely sure they never read Peter and the wolf. They wanted everybody in a safe place by 1.00 pm. That's all nice and dandy but spare it to the time you really need it.

I guess they find the general population completely stupid and without lack of real info, the weather channel. Or maybe I live in a bubble, I still find myself thinking that these morons that stay in a manufactured home ( read trailer) do have the info you try to tell us through their Internet connection or cable TV.

As you all can see I'm the idiot, this is what we do when the storm is approaching. ( the reason for me to back Betty in to the garage door is that I read somewhere that that is 1, the first to fail on a house and 2, the best way to prevent it. One has a lot of potential damaging stuff in ones garage would it come loose out of there) and that makes sense.

Isn't this just great

After work I will secure Katie as best I can and sink Alex's optimist. We will likely be spared from the worst of this Hurricane but look what's coming right behind, Ike. That sucker is a category 4 right now. Not staying for that one. We will pack some stuff this weekend so that we can quickly haul ass the heck out of here.

One thing that is for certain, whether the storms go into the gulf or up the east coast they all pay a visit to Haiti. I'm glad I don't live there.

Hannah

The kids and I started to prep Katie yesterday for what might be this years first hurricane to hit us. We took the genoa down and tied some extra lines. All I now need to do come Thursday is to sink the Opti, fill it with water and tie it to the dock so it won't blow away and take the dodger down.

What ever final track it takes we will feel this one, the question is how much. Right now the predicted landfall is right on Charleston.

Rain

It seams to be a day of rain. It is poring pretty good. Some of the bands from Gustav.

I like the outer bands, I feel for the people in the Gulf.
